"‘Twas the day after finals and all through the land
They were climbing from buses, teary-eyed, hand in hand.
Relieved and excited, parents waited around,
But the children they sent were nowhere to be found.
In their place were young men, standing taller and stronger,
And women with confidence, teenagers no longer.
Just a few months before, they were kids with a dream:
With hard work and luck, they’d be part of that team.
Auditions began, and these kids did soon learn
Luck doesn’t matter – this is something you earn.
Harder and longer they worked towards that goal.
Blood, sweat, and tears – they were in heart and soul.
Move-ins soon came, they packed up their gear
A duffel, a mattress, enough socks for a year.
Day after day, they toiled in the sun,
Work until spent…now let’s go for a run!
Meals from a truck, showers in groups,
Daybreak is here, time to rally the troops!
Tour finally starts, the first show is tonight
‘Round the country they’ll travel, and see some great sights.
The memories, and photos, and bonds that are made,
It’s the best part of drum corps, not a single would trade.
A new family grows, that always will last
Never has summer gone by so fast.
To Indy they travel, with new dreams tonight.
No matter the rankings, every corps shows their fight.
The air is on fire, and none can deny
The passion they have – we’re sure they can fly.
The end of the show, all out for retreat,
The scores are announced, seems the journey’s complete.
But they climb from the busses, not ready to part
Each member they hug has a piece of their heart.
A rookie, an age-out, staff, volunteer -
They’ve all joined a club that lasts year after year.
And if you listen closely, as they sleep in their beds,
You’ll hear drum beats and brass runs dance in their heads."
"Because it isn’t your tragedy, and you can’t take on that negativity. You can see it, feel it, live in it for a bit, and then let it go."
